Robin Kingsland, one of the founders of KLP, passed away in December.
His career started in advertising with agencies including Foot Cone & Belding. In the 1960s he became marketing director of the Tetley Tea Company and helped revolutionise the nation’s tea drinking in the 1960s.
In the 1970s, he was one of the three founding partners of Kingsland Lloyd Petersen, along with Colin Lloyd and Christian Petersen. KLP soon became the largest promotional marketing agency in the UK; it was the first business of its type to go public on the London Stock Market and the first independent agency to develop globally, eventually operating in 16 countries through 36 subsidiaries.
Tributes have come from many leading professionals in the sector particularly those whose careers he guided. Tim Arnold says: “Robin was the supreme creative in our business. He was always a pleasure to meet... friendly and caring, yet strong willed and authoritative when he felt the need. Above all, he was often very funny but always, always he was a perfect gentlemen.”
Colin Lloyd, president of the ISP, says: “KLP would not have been what it became without Robin. He is truly a legend and a giant in our industry and will be sorely missed.”
