BPMA meet with Trade Injury team about anti-dumping duties on ceramics
In November we reported that a new directive from the European Commission that imposes up to a 58.8% duty on all ceramic shipments from China, had been introduced after just 24 hours notice. The duty will have an inevitable impact on prices of ceramics in the UK and has caused much concern within the promotional merchandise industry. In an attempt to rectify the issues caused by the recent anti-dumping duties, representatives from the BPMA, alongside EPPA (European Promotional Products Association) met with the Trade Injury Team in Brussels on the 18th February 2012.
The bpma have lobbied Parliament and are working with allied trade bodies including the European Promotional Products Association and the British Retail Consortium to get this decision reviewed. If the European Commission decides to make this law, it will do so from May and it will be in place for a period of at least 5 years.
In response to the overnight introduction of these duties, EPPA filed an official complaint with the EU Trade Commissioner, resulting in the meeting with the Trade Injury Team. At the meeting the representative group explained the expected consequences for the European promotional products industry.
The Trade Injury Team will now consider the arguments, and report their findings for comment. If any changes are recommended, this will take place at a meeting of the European Council on the 22nd May 2013.
