Margot Parker, Director of EurocomConsult and regular contributor to Promo e-News, is a specialist in European directives and legislation pertaining to the promotions idustry. Margot has provided some information about the changes to EU textile regulations:
"The EU institutions have finally agreed in April 2011 to simplify textile regulations at the EU Parliaments plenary session held on May 2011, it is expected to adopt the proposed new regulation on textile names and labelling during the second reading. The regulation stipulates that labels must indicate the exact fibre composition and it also introduces a new labelling requirement to non textile parts of animal origins such as fur so that consumers can make more informed decision. "The European Parliament wants to replace voluntary practices with a mandatory indication of country of origin. The new regulation will have a total of 63 amendments which will supersede three existing EU directives as of January 2012, which will allow the use of new textile fibres. "The Council and the European Parliament will continue to carry out in depth studies concerning further requirements of mandatory labelling, this could include handling instructions, unification of sizes and allergic substances."
