Plans for EU Labelling to Add Costs to Clothing and Shoes
Margot Parker, Director of industry advisory agency, EurocomConsult, brings us this news:
The European Commission has been asked by some member states to withdraw proposals for a mandatory ‘made-in’ label to be attached to certain imported consumer goods from outside the EU.
Under the present proposal, a range of consumer goods imported from outside the 27 EU member states would have to carry a ‘made-in’ label. The scheme would apply to promotional textiles, clothing and shoes. Importers and retailers would meet the cost of this scheme. It would not affect goods traded between EU countries.
The Commission’s own Impact Assessment says the label could cause extra costs of up to £1.36 per article for clothing and £1.82 for shoes. At present the UK can choose whether to let it be known where goods imported from outside the EU have been produced.
Whatever the outcome of this proposal, added costs are not what is needed when Europe clearly needs growth, not further red tape for businesses to endure.
